Comments about this video: Cool video! I was worried about being able to do this in my driveway tomorrow. Now my only worry is how bad the winter salt has rusted things together. :-). Great video! Very informative and oddly comical! Thanks for posting this it will help me with my truck! Thanks. Just a backyard mech. trying to save money and winging it along the way. I did learn from error that if I'm changing just the uj's that I dont need to remove the main wheel bearing nut (the one with the cotter pin.) That is only needed if you want to change the wheel bearing. Yep. Your rotor may be stuck, but just pound on it for awhile and it should eventually come off. (of course on the side as shown in the video NOT the brake pad surface part. I did not film how much and how hard I had to bang on the rotor before it finally jarred loose.) The odometer sending unit is easily removed with a simple allen wrench.

Dec 23, 2009 So my u joints in my front driveline need replaced. I've never replaced one of 1998.5 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L QC/SB. Rebuilt vp44, 100gph
Comments about this video: Hi this is probably a dumb question but i need to replace the whole hub assembly but i don't know what the name of the part the hub is mounted to is called i've tried looking up hub mount to no avail please help. what is the part the hub is attached to called?Okay, don't take this as lack of appreciation in your posting this video. It's nice to see you have a lift, however, to use the wrong socket, and then immediately follow it up by hitting the caliper with a ball-pin hammer is a no, no. That's a real good way to break it, soft-blow hammer or pry it off with a pry bar or large screwdriver. On hard-to-break bolts or nuts, you don't use 12pt sockets, unless you want to round it off like you did the hub nut. Use a puller to remove the hub, sorry...It's called a ball peen hammer and your not going to break your caliper by tapping it off. It'snot that delicate. 2nd, that nut was big enough that there was no 6 point socket in the set, run what ya brung and get it done. 3rd, I've seen many a hub in the rust belt that a puller just isn't going to remove. Don't be sorry, constructive feedback is always welcome. . what size socket did u use to take the big nut off i tried a 38mm didn't work also does that have too be torqued thanks. Ok, I'm going to ask a dumb question, but please help. The shaft that the "castle" nut goes on, can you get just that shaft and if so what is it called? We are trying to replace that short shaft as it is stripped and the auto parts stores look at me like I'm a stupid azz. Please any help, junk yard part or new part, just need the name or if we can have the shaft re-cut for the nut????? well not down here in TX, having a hard time finding one, been looking for 3 days now. They have plenty of the 44 spine but no 60 spine.hey man i had a ? yesterday i was mudding and my 4x4 went out now it just clunks when put in 4x4 or when i turn sharp and hit bumps what could it be?Does anybody know what size socket that castle nut is? and also do you have to take that nut off to replace the ujoint? why cant you pull the whole hub assy off together?mine is on the drivers/left side thats bad.If the hub bearing is fine then you dont have to remove the axle nut, and driving a chisel in behind the hub kills the dust shield and shim, loosen the 14mm 12 point hub bolts and use the socket and a short extension and leave it on the bolt and turn the steering wheel till the extension hits the axle housing and you will push the hub unit out with no damage you can even start the truck and use the power steering to help I have done lots this way even the very rusty ones...jarrid im getting what ur talking about, but i wouldnt mind taking off the hub just to regrease the bearing in it, do you know the size of the castle nut, im thinking its around a 35mm but not sure.also i need to pull the drivers side off is there anything dif from doing the right side? as far as the axle linning up once u put it back inside? other than the splines ? i saw a vid where the guy said the drvrs side is diffrent??Nice video! glad somebody finally showed how the Axel comes out...didn't expect it to just flop there ;). Coat the new hub and the hole it goes on the axle tube with anti-seize compound before installation. When getting the hub loose i suggest leaving the bolts a 1/4 to 3/8 loose in the back. Getting a deep socket ( or regular) but it on the one of the bolts. Hold it on there with a channel lock and hit the socket with a brass hammer. If you don't have a brass hammer use a regular one but some socket damage may occur. Move from one bolt to the next until you see a space start to show on the outside. Do it enough to get a pry bar or big flathead screwdriver in then work it out. I will be hard.
Thank you for the video, it's very helpful. I have a 2000 ram with the same problem. I was curious how hard it would be to change the u joint, but you answered my question. Thanks again, Matt. good job marking the axle shaft yoke. Those Things are only meant to go left and right not up and down witha u joint in them. ive seen some crazy stuff happen to Jeeps with axles being put on 180 from factory. what kinda of front end do you got? because i went to go and replace my u joint. and i ended up messing up a bunch of things. i went to go get a replacement axel for the standard 1500 and the splines were shallow not deep like yours are.
the easier way to get the hub bearing off is to back the hub bolts out a little bit and use a 12 point 14 mil socket you dont care about and hit the socket with a hammer. it will drive the hub out with ease. hi i have a 96 dodge ram and i tried to put the 2008 laramie rims on it, the back fit but the front brakes have this huge nut i think it is to hold the brakes i heard they changed them in 98 to not stick out as much, but i was wondering what i had to do to be able to put my rims on and the center peice wont hit if anyone has any idea how pls respond thx. On a 2001 the "king nut" or "hub nut" is a 1 11/16". It's a hard size to find. With how hard they are to break loose I would not recommend using a 1 3/4" which some people do. heat the head of the bolts till they get cherry red, and let it cool down for a hour now use wd40 and they will be out like new..god bless you it works for me tanks. I just did both front u joints and hubs on my 98 today. The castle nut on the hub is 1 11/16". I was worried about causing spline damage hammering the hub off. Ended up using a gear puller. It worked out well.
A trick I used when doing my 3/4 ton was to us an air-hammer with a mushroom tip...and works. And if you cant get the bolts loose, try a torch...
I am having a tough time trying to break the 3 hub bolts free. New England truck with lots of rust :( Already snapped one wrench, been using PB and hammering trying to break em loose but no luck. Any tricks y'all know of? Thanks.
Hey guys, whats the outer spline count on the axle shaft? I'm looking to do an SFA for a 03 Silverado with crappy IFS. I want to retain my new Timken wheel hubs, Powerslot slotted rotors, rebuilt calipers, and Russel steel brake lines. Thanks!
My ex boyfriend changed the ujoints on my truck and now the front differential is leaking, how hard is this for me to fix? Depends on your skill level. YouTube channel "spelunkerd" has a great video of him doing it. Good luck. Nice demo. I envy your access to that lift, and your uncluttered, clean new shop. It looks like you had the most trouble getting the hub out. I found a trick to getting the hub clear. If you tap on a socket over the heads of the three bolts, partially loosened, the hub comes loose without having to use pry-bars.
Thanks for the video, gives me a better idea of what I'm doing. I'm replacing the entire driveshaft assembly on the same kind of truck, and I'm wondering if you guys have any tips on getting the u-joint seated back into the transfer case. I believe the correct socket is 1 11/16. The nut can be difficult to remove, a trick may be to remove the cotter pine then bolt the wheel back on the hub and set the truck down with out the center cap, then crack the nut loose. You will probably need a breaker bar and may need to stand on it. There is a torque spec on that nut for re-assembly. Kinda missed those points in the vid. Good luck.

member. Reged: Jan 20 2003 Does anyone know the ''hub bolt'' socket size on the front drivers side? 2007 Ram 2500 mega cab hemi 4x4
Comments about this video: Jack it up on a thick board, not grass surface. Don't strike or hit the caliper with (ratchet, it could break it) anything other than a soft-blow hammer, or use a pry-bar and work it loose. You already figured out the hard way not to use the puller until AFTER you remove the four bolts on the back, sorry. All in all, a nice guy showing how to do it without all the perks of a shop, and truck stand etc. Thanks for the video. Some guys dont even take the wheel off of these trucks. They cut the joints out with a torch and blast the end caps off while its still in the truck, turning the wheel all the way to one side. Up here in Massachusetts, your never gonna get 2500 rotors off without breakin shit. Excellent video, thanks for sharing! I just replaced my ujoint today same side, on my 96 2500 with the the v10 and the dana 60 front end. now its leaking from where the shaft goes in.
I removed my caliper, the four bolts in the back, and the giant 1 3/4ths nut, my rotor will not come off, will I need a puller or is there some other way?
Most likely the rotor and bearing assembly are rusted tight to the spindle. It's not easy to get this apart. Is there other ways to remove the axle stub (i believe that's what it is called) if you don't have a socket that big? I got a 97 Ram 2500 cummins and the u joints are going on mine and I don't want to pay my mechanic 400-500 to do them (no offense to him, lol).Hi! My parents have a 2002 2500 Dodge Ram 360, 4wd. When we are driving her, sometimes she has this god awful sound coming from the passengar front. It usually happens when we are going about 40mph and it's a wicked grinding. If you let off the gas, it stops. We just did front end work to it so we have no idea what's up anymore. If you have an idea, that'd be great! Thanks!Well here's what I got I got the 1/2 tomb dodge with a 360. Well sometimes when I go to put it in 4 hi the front did doesn't want to lock in it makes this loud clunking sound when it does engage finally I'm hoping all it is is just low diff fluid in the front differential. The front end sound like a differential should it doesn't make any odd sounds other then road noise. I replaced the front axle vacuum motor and the vacuum switch on the transfer case. I'm lost for words on what it can be. It could be the vacuum line is not making a good seal at one end. If you don't get proper vacuum at the actuator it wont engage the front axle all the way.
Thanks for the posting! Now I'm a bit more educated about my 1998 Dodge Ram I just bought. Now I'm no longer afraid of messing with those Spider joints. And yes I have a 6 Foot "persuasion" bar for tough nuts.. Gotta do this on my Cherokee today, I'll reply later to let you know if you were helpful. Haha, wish me luck!!! dammm that is a lot of shit to do.. makes me lose confidence in my mechanics ability to do this i may need someone more credible dam.
Thanks for the video. I was fighting with my 92 YJ to get that uni off. did the other one about three years ago but forgot how i did it.
Hopefully this will be similar for my 05 3500...The driver side axle ujoint is chattering on mine...Have heard the replacement parts are a bit steep and it was recommended that the wheel bearing be changed at the same time...
Video looks great, however I don't suggest putting anti seize or any liquid/grease on the threads on the lug nut studs. It will change how much they will be torqued to when you go to tighten them. If a stud breaks because it's rusty, just replace it. :). I guess I don't quite agree... Torqued correctly, no matter what's on the threads, they will stay at that torque. Thanks for the comment!I didn't mean to say they would loosen up, if that's what you were thinking. Applying grease or anti-seize on lug nut studs can cause the nut to over tighten when tightening down on the stud. I've found when i work on other people's cars that have grease on the threads, it tightens the nuts down too tightly. I prefer a dry stud/nut to tighten to avoid premature lug stud failure and potential rotor warp. Some people don't have any problems, others do. I guess it's a matter of opinion to some.I have experienced the opposite problem by not applying anti-seize,you get a false torque reading because of a bur or a corroded nutt and the nut is not as tight as you think it is,thats why I clean my studs with wire brush and apply anti-seize compound. You should be torquing in increments anyway,so there should be no problem with over-torquing. Nicely edited video,I'm not a big fan of the backyard seat of your pants approach to mechanics but as far as getting the basic idea your content is sufficient,if your methods a little lacking.Beating on shaft to get the caps out is a no-no..Also Chrysler SB states it DOES matter whether the pieces are in phase or not, should have marked them.Same with a driveline shaft.Glad to see you mentioned the fact you removed the tie-rod end for no reason.Anyway thanx for taking time to contribute. I love it when I get backhanded comments... Thanks anyway for watching... I think you were trying to be a little nice, but it was a hard to decipher the true intent.the problem is i suck ad editing my own comments.i had this really long post that didn't sound so critical, but after editing for space it got all chopped up and totally turned around in content.Sorry for coming across as condescending.I shoulda just deleted it.LOL. No problem Buddy. I understand how comments get twisted and taken the wrong way. I DO appreciate your comment and I should have taken it differently. You made my day coming back and explaining. Not many commenters would do that.i would not use a hone where the u join caps go. if they are loose and start to slip around in there you are going to need to replace the shaft because you won't be able to keep u joints in them they will wear out very quickly.Best video on how to replace the u-joints I have a 97 ironicly my passenger side is bad to I had no Idea how to get the caps out you are a life saver man thank you for the video. How the hell did those jack stands stay above ground under the weight of such an engine?! Good work, fellas! Very straight forward instructions. My Ram 2500 is a 2006 but everything looks familiar. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks for the video! when i hit 55mph it makes a loud vibrating noise could it be the front u joint? its also leaking but little spots from there also. thanx buddy just did mine today..1500 series though, your vid made me feel like i had actually done it before..i used 1 11/16 socket with a 3/4 drive, socket i found at tractor supply here in n.y,$6.95...and yeah that bearing housing is no joke to remove. What did you use to remove the bearing housing? other than a lot of WD-40, Release all and a big hammer. Having a hard time removing mine any suggestions.Great video. I'm hoping to do a U-Joint on my '97 Ram 1500 Sport this weekend. Question for you... where did you buy the 1.75 inch socket? I've called all the local hardware stores, NAPA, Advance Auto Parts, etc. No one has that specific sized socket. I'm sure I can special order it but I'm just curious where you got yours. Thanks! Its the same procedure on my 98 2500 ive replaced both hub bearings didn't do the u joints though bought to have to replace the passenger side hub bearing again damn Napa parts I run stock lift on 315 70 16. what size tires are you running? and are those eagle alloy rims? I have a 96 dodge cummins and running stock rims with 285's and they look small, likes the way yours looks.Do you know if this is basically the same for a 2006 2500? I don't think the drive train changed much other than ABS.. I worked as a tire tech for 4 years for HD and OTR tires and i was told that anti lock tight and ati size will actually cayse lug nut failure. Never heard of this, it's recommended practice at may tire places. I guess I don't understand how it could cause damage. doesn't any front wheel driven axle use a CV joint? i thought U joints were only for the back wheels where you didn't have to steer.hey all just a lil tip the tool i got from autozone to press out the upper and lower ball joints will also press out the ujoints with out any hassels, plust it saved beating on them for an hour. Thanks! My mechanic just called and told me that during the process of replacing my break rotors on my '03 Ram that my rear u-joints were shot. Now I have a video to show her how important this is. :). awesome vid. i just spent 400 in new front end steering parts, and the u joint started the dowhill slide i heard the clicking; crawled under to check it and when i grabed my tie rod to slide under it dam near seperated from the joint. so tommorow i start the rebuild process, atleast the snow has held off and it will be ready for winter. hey awesome vid I have a question... I'm working on a 96 ram like this too 2500 4wd dana 60... how do u seperate the bearing from the rotor? do u pound out the wheel studs? or no? im not sure. thank you. so when you turn will it make that clunking noise cause everytime i turn its makes clunking noises likes its the joins or the trac bar. I was wondering if this has changed over the years,, I have a 2009 2500 and the u joint is making some noise,, might be3 the bearing also, will have to check it...tire doesnt move though when in the air. I'm not sure if this is different or not. It should be pretty close though. Make sure you have both front tires off the ground if you want it to turn by hand.

Well done. I've never done this before, and I've got to change my front right u-joint. Very informative and helpful video. Thank you. When you guys did this job did you guys install the spacer shim between the wheel bearing and the spindle or did you guys just discard that? OK just wanted to make sure cause a lot of folks don't understand that. Great video though!!!! ANy tips on getting the seals in the housing? I am replaceing the cardan joints on the front driveline, but the caps are really stuck in there- i have tried the back side of a splitting mall, tried the vice with sockets placed over the caps (one large one small to press them out) and broke the vice in half- next up, we are going to try our 27 ton log splitter with one small socket on one cap, and a larger deep socket placed OVER the other cap. Fingers crossed! Darn greeseless stock joints. If the caps are stuck even after removing the caps you can heat the yokes with a torch. The cast iron will not be affected by the heat if you allow the yoke to AIR COOL - DO NOT cool them with water or compressed air. Allow all heat color to come out of the yokes before attempting journal cap removal.Update, I have completed both the cardan and the front driveline joints with ease on the log splitter- i gotta say if you have a log splitter it makes poping the rusted caps off as easy as opening a beer. Log splitter at idle. large socket over one cap, small 15mm on the other with everything lined up and all hands 'n fingers clear.. and pop come off the caps! your trick of brake hone and air happer really helped too :).
